One Thing Needed

Reading Luke 10.41-42 and Jesus states, "You are worried about many things, but only one thing is needed." This passage is referring to Martha who busied herself with trying to make things perfect, while Mary sat at the Lord's feet and spent time in his presence. Contemplating this, I wonder how often I have worked myself into a dither worrying about nonsense things which matter not when all I had to do was spend time in the LORD'S presence. It's a reflection everyone can answer and more times than not, we'll all come up with pretty much the same answer. We worry far too much and spend far too little time with God.

How do we slow down enough to breathe in peace and exhale all the things which bind us up? Especially as we enter into a busy time of year, a time when we should be preparing the heart for the coming Christ. How do we stop the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping, partying, baking and preparation for family long enough to make sense and remember what it really is we are celebrating? Jesus said one thing was needful and Mary chose well. Choose today, right now, the one needed thing because of all things, there truly is only one thing needed.

Thank you Lord for giving us the miracles of all miracles, Jesus. Thank you for the Savior who bears all our sins and pours out grace like a waterfall. Thank you for healing many people we know and those we don't. Thank you for covering us mercy and holding us up when we come to the end of our own trying to get it right. Thank you for the gift of your Holy Spirit who groans when our words are all spent.

Yes beloved, there is only one thing needed. Stop, turn, and fall into the arms of the everlasting God. The only place where hope is restored and miracles still happen, and everyday is a fresh journey with a faithful and loving God. Amen.
